Soprano Laura Claycomb has been voted the Dallas Opera’s Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year.

Raised in Dallas and a graduate of Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University, Claycomb has a major international career. But only in March did she make her local debut, as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto. She was praised in these pages for “limpid tone, dazzling technique and eloquent expression.”

In an email to the company, Claycomb wrote, “It certainly takes a village to produce a great artist, and that village has been my beloved Dallas. A Texas-sized ‘Thank You’ to you all for awarding me this prestigious distinction.”
